During the 1960’s, the Surrealist artist Salvador Dali could see that many people around him were on some kind of high. Due to the nature of Dali’s art, it was often suspected that he was also under the influence. He responded to accusations by saying “I don’t do drugs, I am drugs!” – he firmly believed he only needed himself and his imagination to get high. He would resort to alternative ‘drug free’ methods to enter a semi-lucid state which included standing on his head until he almost passed out.
